Japanese politics and foreign policy; the international politics of the Asia-Pacific; culture and identity in international relations theory; domestic politics/international politics nexus; security studies; U.S. foreign policy.
Current research projects
- Domestic political reform in Japan as a result of the historic August 2009 election -- especially in regards to likely changes in Japan's security policies and policies towards Asia and the United States.
- Edited book project contributor to a new project on U.S.-Japan-China trilateral cooperation in the coming years, funded by the Luce Foundation and sponsored by the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS); chapter author of chapter on Prospects for Security Cooperation. Published volume expected in Fall 2009.
- Other topics I am reading about/interested in include continued movement toward intelligence reform in Japan and the United States, the strengthened foreign policymaking roles of the prime ministers of advanced industrial democracies (such as the U.K, Germany, and Japan), and the evolving security architecture and coordination in East Asia and beyond.
